Weather Alert: Widespread Frost, Hard Freeze

New gasoline can damage your car

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--You may never even make it to rush hour if you're using a new type of gasoline that AAA warns could destroy your car.

Alternative fuel could lead you down a bad road if you're not careful.
The problem? Recently approved E15 mixture. AAA Spokesperson Don Lindsey says, "E15 has a little more alcohol ethanol than E10 which is the most common blend we have."

That extra alcohol can damage cars that aren't set up to handle it. David Rigsbey with Fisher Tire says, "Over time it could eat through rubber hoses which could lead to fuel leakage or melted rubber spread throughout fuel system leading to irreparable damage."

Only 5% of cars on the road today can safely use E15. Check your manual to see if it's approved for your car. AAA is urging regulators and the industry to stop the sale of E15 until motorists are better protected. Lindsey says, "We support alternative fuels. It's just that extra 5% has a potential to cause a lot of problems without education without pump labeling."
