SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT)- A federal grant will pay for the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department to have live-in firefighters for the first time.
At a meeting on Monday night, the department spoke with applicants for the program. The applicants include college students, who would be trained to be firefighters, and some current volunteers with the department.
Fire Chief Kevin Nunn says having firefighters live at the stations, instead of going home after each call out, will allow them respond immediately.
A total of nine firefighters will be housed with money from the grant. The grant will cover four years. Chief Nunn hopes to include live-in firefighters in the department's budget after the grant runs out.
The deadline to apply is November 9th. The firefighters would move in this January.
