KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Do you know if you're living near a "dangerous dog?" Now it's easy to find out.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office has launched a Dangerous Dog Map which shows every dog ruled dangerous by a judge.

It has the name of the owner, their address, breed and also the dog or human it attacked.

The move to do this was deemed even more necessary after two vicious attacks this year. They're hoping awareness could help keep the public safe.

Safe from dogs like Gidget, a Beagle/Jack Russell Terrier mix who looks friendly, but she has a "record."

"Attacking and killing a neighbor's cat, and that lasts until 2014," said Captain Robert Hubbs with the KCSO.

Now she's on the list, and the county is keeping tabs on her after putting her on "probation."

"The animal has to be kept at a high level of scrutiny, by either having it in the fencing and it's usually for a couple of years," said Hubbs.

The map is easy to use, and it not only tells you where dangerous dogs live, it also lists the animal's violent act.

"It's about making things safer. Making kids that have to play in the neighborhood at least have the parents aware that there's an animal down the street that can cause them a problem,"

"If people know that this neighborhood has a dog that is dangerous, that's a good thing. They can stay out of that neighborhood. But it may act as a restraint so people can keep dogs under their control,"

That's why the name of the owner is also included.

"It's like they say, 'Don't blame the dog, it's the owner's responsibility to make sure that the animal stays on its property," said Corporal Frankie Byrne with the Animal Control Unit.

Right now, there are 14 court-declared "dangerous" dogs in Knox County, which does not include ones labeled as so by the city of Knoxville.

The Sheriff's Office says they get about 10,000 complaints about dog attacks every year.
