KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- A new proposal in Nashville could change who decides a school system's budget.
Under the proposed plan, school board members would no longer make up the budget.
Instead counties would set up finance Committee's which would be made up of the following seven members;
1. County Mayor
2. Director of Schools
3. Highway superintendent
4. Two members of the County Commission
5. One School board member
6. The County Trustee
The state believes it will help counties get budgets in on time and make those budgets more transparent.
Right now 42 counties in the state have their budgets created by school boards, without talking with the county.
The County Financial Management System Act of 2013 is just a proposal right now if it is approved it could go into effect this coming school year.
