OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- In a 4 to 1 vote, school officials voted to allow the Oak Ridge High School boys basketball team to travel to the Bahamas for a tournament.
The invitation-only tournament will be held in Freeport, Bahamas in November. It's an exciting opportunity that almost didn't happen because of liability and financial concerns.
The school board held a special meeting Monday evening to discuss the matter.
Superintendent Robert Smallridge recommended the board votes in favor of the team traveling overseas.
"Yes, something could happen, but it could happen on any trip," Smallridge said.
Coach Aaron Green attended the meeting to answer any questions.
After further discussion, the board approved the trip and will have an attorney look over waivers and liability issues.
"Just real excited about it and thankful for our board and the superintendent and administration at the high school for their support," Green said.
The trip will be paid by the Boosters Club. Green said the team plans to raise money as well.
