OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- A car pursuit ends with Oak Ridge Police Chief James Akagi tackling one of the suspects.
It happened Monday afternoon when Chief Akagi was on the way to the police department.
Akagi told Local 8 News he avoided being struck by an SUV. He noticed the driver, Landon Thomas, was driving erratically so he tried to pull him over. Thomas didn't stop and lead Akagi on a short chase.
Once they got to Spellman Avenue, the SUV pulled into a driveway and Thomas and his passenger Justin Harris took off running. That's when Akagi ran after them, tackled Harris and arrested him.
According to the police report, Harris weighs 250 pounds.
Officers detained Thomas shortly after.
Akagi told Local 8 News he feels lucky it ended the way it did. He also acknowledged his officers who were quick to respond to the scene.
Thomas and Harris have been charged with evading and resisting arrest. Thomas was also charged with reckless driving.
Harris was on state probation, and Thomas on federal parole.
