Oak Ridge student wins state geography bee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Students from all across Tennessee have been in Nashville to compete in the state level of the 25th annual National Geographic Bee, and a seventh-grader from Robertsville Middle School in Oak Ridge has taken top honors.

Adithyan Sujithkumar won $100 Friday and a National Geographic DVD and will represent Tennessee in national finals next month in Washington, D.C. College scholarships up to $25,000 will be given to first-, second- and third-place winners, and the national winner will travel with a parent or guardian to the Galapagos Islands.

Questions are prepared by the National Geographic Society, and the contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest and increase public awareness.

Schools with students in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to compete.
