GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) - Three weeks later than usual, Ober Gatlinburg's ski slopes opened for the season Sunday.
"I've been waiting for a while. We stayed up here this weekend just so we could get a chance to ride on the hills," said Allen Spain.
High temps late into December have kept the park from making snow until this past weekend.
"It's like an early Christmas present from mother nature," said winter sports director John Cossaboom
But even with Christmas just two days away, there were plenty of people skiing, snowboarding, and tubing down the slopes.
"I am super stoked," said ski instructor Jessica Ogle.
This year's season celebrates 50 years. To celebrate, Ober Gatlinburg will host a retro day where skiers who show up in retro ski gear will get a discounted day pass.
Ober Gatlinburg will be open with limited hours Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
