Off-duty Knoxville Police Officer suffers accidental shooting

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Submitted) -- This morning at approximately 6:05 a.m., the Knoxville Police department reports that Knoxville Police Department Officer Bill McMahan was removing his personal off-duty weapon from his cruiser when the gun discharged once.

The Glock .40 caliber round entered the thigh area of his leg.

A second off-duty officer provided first aid until Officer McMahan could be transported to UT Medical Center.

Officer McMahan is currently being treated for a serious leg injury.

Both off-duty officers were preparing to leave Officer McMahan’s residence off Papermill Drive for a secondary job at a construction site.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing.

Officer McMahan has been with the department since November 1981.
