MAYNARDVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Most families on Summerset Way were in bed early Sunday morning.
"I was asleep and started hearing some loud bangs. I thought it was fireworks," said Mandy Grimm who lives a few houses down.
But what she heard was gunfire.
According to Maynardville Police, two officers responded to a domestic call around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on the 100 block of Summerset Way.
When they arrived, homeowner Mark Smith ran out and shot at one of the officers, according to police. The officer fired back.
"I was really surprised. I didn't really know what was going on at first. This stuff doesn't happen right here," said Grimm who watched it all from her backyard.
Maynardville Police Chief Brian Smith told Local 8 News Smith was shot twice in the shoulder and taken to UT Medical Center. He's expected to be ok.
The officer, who hasn't been identified yet, wasn't injured. The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay while TBI investigates.
After TBI finishes its investigation, the case will be handed to the District Attorney's Office for review.
