KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A fire in the Westview Tower Apartments Thursday evening sends one person to the hospital, while another individual had to be detained by police for wanting to help firefighters "a little too much," according to the Knoxville Fire Dept.
Firefighters were called to the complex on Gleason Drive around 6:20 p.m. after an alarm alert them to an activated sprinkler head on the 11th floor. Smoke filled the hallway and water began to pool as crews made their way up there.
A woman was taken to a local hospital for mild smoke inhalation that happened as she worked her way to the lobby.
Firefighters managed to plug the sprinkler by cramming a rubber wedge into it, but not before water had leaked into several apartments below.
Maintenance crews are evaluating the damage, while the cause of the fire is being investigated.
