SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Sweetwater man faces murder charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the head during an argument late Thursday night. Twenty-six year-old Alonda Ann Underwood died shortly after arriving at UT Hospital, according to the Monroe Co. Sheriff's Dept.
Ray Charles White, 54, was charged with Second Degree Murder and is being held at the Monroe Co. Sheriff's Office on $250,000 bond. He is due to be arraigned on Monday. The Sheriff's Dept. noted he was arrested three years ago on a Domestic Assault charge.
Deputies were called to the Sweetwater home they were sharing shortly after 11:00 p.m. White was taken into custody and emergency responders tried to save Underwood, who was then rushed to the hospital where she died.
They believe White and Underwood were arguing and the fight escalated to the point where White shot and killed her.
Neighbor Thomas Hicks said he's shocked something like this happened on his quiet, rural road and described what he saw when he looked out his window:
"There was about 50 cops coming in up here last night. And ambulences and firetrucks," said Hicks.
