WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Jonesborough man was arrested following alleged vehicular assault on deputy.
Deputies say deputies 47-year-old Joe Timothy Hankal was pulled over on Friday for two traffic violations. Investigators say Hankal first grabbed their attention when they noticed he wasn't wearing a seat belt and when he tried covering his face with his hand.
Deputies say Hankal gave them a false name, but he drove off as they started to confront him.
Investigators say the deputy would have been seriously hurt if Hankal’s vehicle did not spin on ice before gaining traction on the pavement, allowing the deputy to get away.
Hankal was boxed in prior to reaching some spike strips, but when he got out to run, he tased several times.
Deputies say they found a loaded .25 automatic handgun in his car.
Hankal was charged with Aggravated Assault on an Officer, Felony Evading Arrest, Resisting Arrest, Violation of Habitual Motor Offender Restriction, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Possession of a firearm in the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.
