GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- With warmer weather here, a repaving project is resuming in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The work will include a 6.1-mile section of U.S. 441, also called Newfound Gap Road. The section being resurfaced this summer extends from the picnic area at the Chimneys to the Alum Cave Bluffs parking area, where work last summer ended.
Park officials said drivers should expect delays on the two-lane mountain road. There will be no daytime paving work from June 15 to Aug. 15 and none in October, when the Smokies are thronged by visitors to see the fall foliage.
This summer's work is part of three phases that will eventually repave all 15 miles of the road from the park boundary at Gatlinburg to Newfound Gap on the Tennessee-North Carolina border.
