UPDATE: KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Police say the female killed when she tried to cross Broadway Street was Henrietta Ortiz, 51, of Knoxville.
The driver was James Welch,45, also of Knoxville.
According to a police report It appears the victim may have darted into traffic in front of the vehicle that struck her.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time.
Original Story- A woman was struck by a car and killed late Tuesday night as she tried to cross a major north Knoxville road, according to the Knoxville Police Dept. Authorities are not currently releasing her name nor the name of the driver.
Reports indicate the woman was crossing in the 4800 block of Broadway around 10:15 p.m. when she was hit. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers say the investigation is still ongoing and they will release more information as it becomes available.
