Two Irishmen charged with stealing American flag

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/AP) -- Police in Knoxville have arrested two Irish men and charged them with stealing an American flag from the Tennessee Valley Authority headquarters building.

John Kerrigan, 33, and James Mulroy, 28, both of Dublin, are accused of jumping out of a taxi, cutting the rope holding the flag, and taking off with their trophy.

Police tracked Kerrigan and Mulroy to the Crowne Plaza hotel, where officers reportedly found the flag in between the beds. The flag is being held as evidence. Agency spokeswoman Barbara Martocci said the utility doesn't plan to fly it again.

Kerrigan and Mulroy were charged with vandalism and misdemeanor theft. Both made bond and were released from the Knox County Jail, which does not have records on whether inmates have attorneys.
