ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) - Police have temporarily closed two Alcoa hotels on Thursday.

According to the nuisance complaint, Alcoa police has responded to 755 complaints at the Days Inn/Budget Inn Royal Extended Stay from January 1, 2007 until the end of 2012.

The report says security cameras were not properly monitored or maintained, and that management of the property is on notice for doing nothing to help law enforcement stop the illegal activity.

Police served the papers to managers Jagubhai V. Patel and Bhagu V. Hira, who operate the hotels for the owner, Mani Associates, located in Hermitage.

During that six-year span, police responded to: 36 reports of assault, 90 calls of drunkenness, 19 responses for drug possession or sales, 74 thefts, and three possible rapes.

In total, 159 people were arrested stemming from crimes on the property.

"They said you'll have until 5:00 to get out because we're gonna close this place down," said Charles Quillen, who was staying at the Budget Inn with his family.

The guests are gone, doors locked, and a police officer is standing guard, telling people they can't stay here anymore.

"It's been along time coming. We've put extensive man hours, a lot of research by the city attorney to go into this," said Phillip Dunn, the acting chief of the Alcoa Police Dept.

But Quillen's family, who were staying until they found a place to live, finding out they had to leave is a hardship.

"It's pretty upsetting but we'll make it. Life is hard sometimes, but we'll make it through with the Lord's help," said Quillen.

Other guests who didn't want to go on camera were also upset, and now left wondering where they're going to sleep.

But police and neighboring businesses are resting easier knowing things will be quieter.

This is the first time Alcoa has filed a nuisance complaint to close a business. A judge will make a permanent decision on the hotels' future following a court date.
