Police: man attacks and robs someone for 75 cents

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Just before 9 p.m. on Saturday, police said John Gardner walked up to another man outside Zoomerz gas station in Dandridge.

"Asked him for money, struck him knocked him to the ground and then ran off with approximately 75 cents," said Detective Lieutenant Kenneth Lodwick.

"I think that's awfully violent for only 75 cents," said Jeanie Shults, a Zommerz customer.

"That kind of stuns me that someone would attempt that," said Dino Angelos, another Zoomerz customer.

Officers said the man who got hit in the head went inside to call for help. Cops found Gardner a short time later with the change.

"That's probably not even enough to buy a pack of gum or anything like that," said Shults.

Detectives asked Gardner what he thought he could buy for 75 cents. His answer? An oatmeal creme pie. Turns out, they sell for 50 cents inside the gas station.

"I've been doing this for over 20 years - 20 plus years and that's the first rarity I've ever seen where somebody has robbed somebody over that little amount of money," said Lodwick.

Gardner faces one count of robbery. He was still in jail Friday evening with a bond 2500 times bigger than what he's accused of stealing. His preliminary hearing is set for November 1.

This isn't the first time Gardner has been in trouble. Last month, he was convicted of two counts of assault and theft under $500 in Hamblen County.
