KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(WVLT)-- The 21 year-old Knoxville man who died in a shootout with members of the Knox Co. Sheriff's Office after barricading himself inside a mobile home on Thursday afternoon has been identified. Jordan Camp had been wanted on several outstanding warrants, including aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and violating parole, according to the sheriff's dept.
One officer was injured in the exchange. A Knox Co. Sheriff's Office deputy identified him as Sgt. Mike Ledbetter. He was taken to U.T. Medical Center for treatment. Ledbetter was reportedly headed back into surgery on Friday.
According to the Sheriff's Office, an officer spotted Camp near the entrance of a trailer park on Canton Hollow Road around 1:00 p.m. When Camp saw them, he took off into the woods. As officers searched with a K-9 unit and a helicopter, Camp barricaded himself in the back bedroom of a nearby trailer.
Negotiators were called in to talk with Camp, while a SWAT team moved in and took a position in the kitchen. Camp reportedly told the negotiators he had guns and was going to kill himself. He later threatened to shoot the officers.
Around 4:00 p.m., police say he pointed a gun out a window and opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing him.
Members of the Knox Co. Sheriff's Office had been searching for camp near the trailer park that day after spotting him there earlier in the morning. They noted he has had several previous run ins with the law, including arrests for assault, public intoxication, resisting arrest, and driving on a suspended license.
His outstanding warrants stemmed from a wreck on June 16 at the intersection of View Harbor and Woody Road. A police report says when the victim, Wesley Gunn, got out of his vehicle to talk to Camp, whom Gunn said he recognized, Camp pulled a large hunting knife.Camp then allegedly thrust the knife at Gunn's face, cutting his hand so badly it required stitches. Police had been searching for him since then.
