Racing for victims of domestic violence

EAST KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Some drivers are hitting the road this weekend aiming to take on some tough obstacles.

But while they race, they also are raising money for those facing the impact of domestic violence.

About 65 drivers of all skill levels will be racing around a smooth, but somewhat tricky track, at east Knoxville's Chilhowee Park.

It's the second year that the "East Tennessee Region Sports Club of America" put on the event. It helps out Knoxville's Family Justice Center and the Legal Aid of East Tennessee.

Both organizations are grateful, while those traveling the course get something out of it as well.

"This is not an us and them issue. Domestic violence affects all of us. And so when victims are in a situation where they are trying to get out of domestic violence, we need to provide them services," said Amy Dilworth with the Knoxville Family Justice Center.

"If you get a chance to talk to some of them, you'll find out that they're having a lot of fun, and they feel good about helping people," said Dave Yoder with Legal Aid of East Tennessee.

Pilot, the main sponsor, is giving $5,000 to the cause. All other funds come from part of the racer's registration and donations from the public.

The event wraps up Sunday morning. You can catch the racers when the flag drops at 10:30 am.
