Roadside killer denied appeal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--Appeal Denied! That was the ruling from the federal appeals court in Nashville for one of six people convicted of killing a 6-year-old girl and her parents back in 19-97.

Karen R. Howell was 17 years old when she and five others from eastern Kentucky abducted the Lillelid (LIL'-ih-lid) family at a rest stop in Greene County, Tenn.

The Lillelid family had just returned from a Jehovah's witness conference when they were taken hostage, shot and left for dead. The couple's 2-year-old son was shot twice but survived. The killers ranged in age from 14 to 20.

A three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday refused to hear Howell's appeal, which had argued that she had received ineffective counsel.
