Public places to cool off in Roane County

Updated: Fri 5:16 PM, Jun 29, 2012

ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Roane County Emergency Management opened Emergency Shelters on Friday for people who had no other way to get out of the heat. The shelters were open in several areas around the county.

At the First Baptist Church in Kingston, church administrative staff was busy making sure they had enough bottled water and ice should people show up. The church says helping people in need is a part of their much larger mission.

"Those that are not fortunate enough to have air conditioning at this time, it's critical that they have some place to go to give their body time to catch up with their needs," said Jody McLoud with the Kingston First Baptist church.

No one showed up on Friday to any of the shelters, but officials believe more people may come over the weekend as the heat takes it toll of their bodies day after day.

There are five locations open across the county, and others may be added.

Each place is open Noon until 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The rescue squad and fire stations will allow pets.
