KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- It's tradition for Louise Ball, LPGA instructor at Gettysvue Country Club to host a tournament that benefits "Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy."
SMA is a genetic disease that affects the muscles, even muscles used to swallow. Most children, if they make it past two years old usually need expensive machines to help them breathe, swallow and get around (like a wheelchair.)
This 18 hole scramble and the $12,000 helps families with children with SMA. There's a link with more information.
The tournament also raises money with sponsors, teams, a raffle, and live and silent auctions. Some of the big items were a green egg (grill) and an ipad mini.
Special thanks to Ruby Tuesday and Papa Murphy's Take and Bake Pizza for providing lunch and dinner for the golfers, guests, and helpers!
A group called the Collies performed live music and there were also fun hats and goofy glasses to don with a fun photo booth.
The Collies will be helping with another SMA fundraiser on May 24th.
It's at the Historic Grove Theater.
Doors open at 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door. $5 for adults and $3 for High School students. All proceeds will benefit FSMA.
