KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Every year the Oxford English Dictionary researches the top word of the year and decides whether it will be entered into the dictionary; this year it's "selfie".
Let's start at the beginning, 'selfie' is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media." according to the Oxford English Dictionary online.
It's a trend that's stuck and it's not just you and me taking selfies it's everyone; celebrities take them, the Pope, Santa and even astronauts in outer space.
Over the past year the usage of the word has increased 17,000% which caught the eye of Oxford editors.
It even beat out other competitors like "twerk", "schmeat" (synthetically produced meat) and "bitcoin" (A digital or virtual currency that uses peer-to-peer technology to facilitate instant payments)
Selfie also launched other words including "helfie" a photo of your hair and "welfie" a selfie taken while you work out.
You can find selfie in the online Oxford English Dictionary but not in the print version yet, however, it might be added in the future.
