Judge delays setting bond for Brooke Morris murder suspect

KINGSTON, Tenn. (WVLT) -- After listening to testimony from several witnesses, a judge has decided to wait before setting bond for the man suspected of killing his former girlfriend Brooke Morris last October.

Lawyers for Shawn Smoot asked to court to set his bond at $100,000, but prosecutors argued that amount was too low. Smoot is charged with first degree murder; he pleaded not guilty in July. The judge said he expects to make his final decision by next Friday.

The Mississippi sheriff who captured Smoot took the stand, describing the arrest. He told the court he found a weapon in Smoot's car along with clothes and a sleeping bag. The sheriff added that when he asked Smoot why he didn't turn himself in when he said he would, Smoot told the sheriff he was afraid,

A U.S. Marshall then described to the court a letter Smoot allegedly wrote to a friend that described what Smoot wanted to do with his belongings should he be sent to jail.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story indicated Smoot pleaded guilty to first degree murder. He, in fact, pleaded not guilty.
