SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Many shoppers decided to say goodbye to the big malls and think small to support local businesses on Small Business Saturday.
Earlene Ledbetter says she likes to shop at local businesses when possible. She says she's often able to find the same items at just as good prices.
"I mean they have really nice things in here so you can decide what you want to spend and how you want to spend it," said Ledbetter. "We like to support local people. We have a lot of good businesses in Seymour."
At Ivy's in Seymour, dozens of people did come out to support the hometown businesses. The owner says buying from her helps to keep her employees working close to home.
"We have things that you can find in the mall, but we also have things you can't find at the mall so you don't have to go that far," said Lori Snapp, of Ivy's.
Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010. To encourage spending this year, Fed Ex gave away 40,000 $25 gift cards for people to use.
