Weather Alert: Showers & Storms This Weekend

A Local 8 Weather Alert has been issued for today. Because of the threat of rain, thunder and even hail, outdoor activities may be disrupted or inconvenienced. What's going on? An upper-level low will be moving across East Tennessee today, creating a more unstable atmosphere.

Official: Experimental plane crashes on take off; two hurt

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--A plane crashed down in Cumberland County near Crossville Memorial Airport Tuesday morning. The couple flying the plane are in critical condition at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

A husband and wife are in the hospital after their plane crashed in Crossville. Officials say it happened upon take-off when the plane stalled , and crashed in the field at the west end of the runway. The call came in around 9:40am eastern. A plane had crashed and two people were trapped inside. Jill Lewis with Cumberland County EMA says, "The emergency workers were working very fast to get the couple out of the plane."

The couple, 72 year olds Phillip and Marian Cashmer were airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. They are in critical condition.

Jill Lewis says it's miracle they survived. The plane slammed into the ground, bounced twice then spun around. Lewis says, "They're very lucky. There are power lines and there's a tree line down here."

Pieces of the plane were scattered across the grass. Crossville Fire Chief Mike Turner says, "They had just taken off from the runway when they went down."

The damaged two seater yellow experimental plane has now been moved to the airport. The FAA is on the scene investigating the crash.
