GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The snow guns are fired up and Ober Gatlinburg is ready to get 50 years of skiing underway in the Great Smoky Mountains.
For nearly 24 hours, the snow has fallen at Ober Galtinburg. Temperatures finally got cold enough that they could make snow, after a year of waiting.
"We've been waiting a long time for snow making and we're extremely pleased that it's finally arrived," said John Cossaboom, Ober Gatlinburg Winter Sports Director. "You know last winter was so rough that we have high expectations for this season and it's only appropriate for us to start making snow on the first day of Winter."
Cossaboom had hoped to open skiing 3 weeks ago, but the weather was too warm. Now he says conditions are perfect for making snow. He hopes to have the snow making continue so the slopes can open Sunday.
