KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- SouthFest, the two-day event designed to draw East Tennesseans across the river to south Knoxville, kicks off the weekend with music at both Emery's 5 & 10 and Disc Exchange for folks getting off work Friday afternoon.
The festival was started as a response to the temporary closure of the Henley Street bridge and, in addition to live music, includes a car show, guided bike ours through south Knoxville, and more.
"There's a perception in other parts of the county that it's just too hard to get to South Knoxville because of the extended bridge closure," explained Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett. "We want to bring people out south for this event so they'll realize the detour is not hard to navigate."
Several bands are on tap Saturday (click link above for full schedule) at both Emery's and the Disc Exchange, including Phoenix Stone, Robinella, and Con Hunley.
McLemore Florist will host an Antique Tractor Show, while the car show will be set up at 4221 Chapman Highway.
The Tour de South bike ride begins at 10:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Appalachian Mountain Bike Association.
