Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT) — South Knoxville will host SouthFest, a new festival-like event, next month in efforts to boost business in the area.
Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett made the announcement Monday afternoon outside of Emory's 5 & 10.
Local business owners couldn't be happier with the idea intended to encourage folks to eat, shop and simply have a good time south of the river.
" I'm extremely excited," said Ron Emery, owner of Emery's 5 & 10. "Sounds like it will be a cash mob on steroids."
According to Mayor Burchett, more than two dozens businesses have had to shut down. Some that are still open are struggling.
“There’s a perception in other parts of the county that it’s just too hard to get to South Knoxville because of the extended bridge closure,” said Mayor Burchett. “We want to bring people out south for this event so they’ll realize the detour is not hard to navigate.”
Some of the entertainment and activities at SouthFest will include:
• Live music
• Family-friendly activities
• Car show
• Circus-style entertainment from the Shriners
SouthFest will be held on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 in South Knoxville.
