KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- As part of its effort to add more than 200 parking spaces to State Street Parking Garage, the City of Knoxville plans to close the escalator connecting State St. and Gay St., next to the Regal Riviera movie theater next week.
The escalator will close at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. It will make way for an elevated walkway, crossing State St. next to the theater. The elevator next to the escalator will remain open and a temporary staircase will be installed, the city added.
The $6.1 million State Street Garage project is expected to add 250 new parking places to the parking deck. It currently 842 spots.
Construction is expected to be finished by the Spring.
