Student testifies in her defense in stabbing trial

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- The former Middle Tennessee State University student charged with murder has testified that she wanted to kill herself after she stabbed her roommate to death.

Sobbing on the stand, 19-year-old Shanterrica Madden on Saturday said she wished she had turned the knife on herself after the fight with Lady Raiders basketball player Tina Stewart.

The confrontation took place after the 21-year-old Stewart called a courtesy officer to report Madden for smoking marijuana.

Madden said she was scared and in pain when she grabbed a knife from Stewart's bed and stabbed her.

She has claimed self-defense.

Meanwhile, District Attorney General Bill Whitesell suggested that Madden hid the knife in her bra and backed Stewart into a corner before killing her.

Testimony concluded Saturday afternoon. The jury will begin deliberations on Monday.
