KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--Tennessee tourism is bringing in millions, but it can bring in much more. That's the word from the tourism commissioner Thursday.
Commissioner Susan Whitaker was in Knoxville speaking to the Greater Knoxville Hospitality Association. She said over the last 5 years, Tennessee tourism has brought in over a billion dollars. She thinks we can have a bigger impact by running commercials like these in states nationwide. The governor has created a marketing committee to bring more tourism to Tennessee. The committee's study found Tennessee only ranks third behind Florida and California for favorable vacation spots.
Tennessee Tourism Commissioner Susan Whitaker says, "The year 2010 was 14.1 billion in expenditures. I'm not releasing numbers yet, but we're up in 95 counties and the numbers will blow everybody away."
Commissioner Whitaker says we must educate people in far reaching states through advertising. Right now Tennessee only runs commercials in neighboring states. She plans on asking Governor Haslam for more money next year.
