The FBI says violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. For mothers who've buried their loved ones - the numbers reflect the pain they live each day.
Memphis takes the lead with 134 murders last year and more than 7,000 aggravated assault cases.
Closer to home, the Knoxville Police Department worked 18 murders and more than 1,000 aggravated assault cases.
Local 8 News spoke with a mother who says she still lives with the pain after two of her sons were murdered.
"Some days are easier than others and when they say time heals all wounds - my wounds aren't healed yet," said Terry Smith.
As for the most violent cities in Tennessee, Memphis and Nashville top the list.
