The meaning of Memorial Day

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- While Americans around the country commemorate the sacrifice Memorial Day honors...what does the day really mean?

Many families gather to grill out and spend time at the park or on the water...enjoying the unofficial start of summer.

But many also take time out to attend events remembering what the phrase..."freedom isn't free"...is all about.

We caught up with some folks visiting the Knoxville National Cemetery.

Photographer Chad Guy was using his camera lens to capture the moving sight of flags placed at every veteran's grave.

He tells us that Memorial Day is a chance to make sure those who made the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.

Army Sargent Chad Rogers says his trip reminds him of those who served before him.

Richard Corbin, Tyler Burnett and Rose James were looking for the graves of relatives...including one service-member they believed died while serving during World War II.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day...started not long after the Civil War to honor the Union dead.

The federal holiday officially became known as Memorial Day in 1967...honoring those who died while serving in the armed forces.
