KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The roads will be busy this weekend with many out enjoying Cinco De Mayo, and all law enforcement agencies are ready.

The goal is to keep everyone safe.

While we've all heard the rule to designate a sober driver, unfortunately many will take a risk and drive after drinking.

But, there are some other safe ways to get home and avoid the backseat of a cop car.

Kenneth Brock, general manager of Fast Service West Knox Taxi, said, "We reserve everyone to come on and have more cabs available, just because we know there's going to be a higher influx of calls."

Brock says weekends are usually busy, but the holiday will keep them running all over town.

If you plan ahead, you can make sure and get a ride home when you're ready. "If they're going to leave, and they know they're going to leave in say a half an hour, that gives us travel time."

If you know you'll be out drinking Saturday, Brock recommends to do some quick homework. Call a cab company and see if you can schedule a ride, or what their hours are.

"I would love for them to have our number, or a taxi number in their cell phone where they can look it up," Brock said. Their number is 865-566-0711.

Fast Service West Knox Taxi will will even schedule a pickup via text message, at 865-765-9589. They also operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will take you anywhere you need to go.

So what will this safe ride home cost you? "Our average fare, usually will run about $14 to 16, depending on where you're going out in west Knoxville, say from Cumberland Avenue."

So, a ride out and back home could run you about $30. If that seems like too much, how about what you pay if you ride in the back of a police car?

Randy Nichols, District Attorney General in Knox County, said, "The mandatory minimum fine is $350, plus the accumulated court costs," for a DUI conviction.

Plus, you would have several hundred dollars in court costs, and you still have to pay your lawyer. "The fee for a drunk driving case is $3,000 anywhere up to $25,000."

Your attorney could get you probation, only then you might have to wear an ankle monitor 24-7. "So there's $300 a month. If we have to put an in-home breathalyzer in your house that's hundreds of dollars a month," Nichols explained.

And you still haven't gotten your license back, which is another $400 dollars.

Driving drunk adds up a lot faster than a safe ride home, even if you think you're okay to drive. "It does not take a lot of alcohol to get you to 0.08 which is the legal limit in our state," Nichols said.

All this is assuming you didn't hurt or kill someone else on the road. That life is priceless, compared to thousands of dollars of debt.

The easiest rule is have a designated driver, drop $30 on a cab ride out and back home; Do whatever you need to do to keep everyone on the roads safe.
