KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- When a storm hits and damages your home, it can be difficult knowing where to turn, and especially difficult knowing how avoid being scammed by contractors looking to take advantage of homeowners.
Luckily, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) offers ways to keep you and your family from being taken advantage of.
The TDCI says to beware of contractors offering to repairs roofs or other storm damage by soliciting door-to-door or by telephone.
The TDCI also points out to never sign over your insurance check or pay with cash, and also never pay the total charges before the work is completed.
Make sure to verify the license of any contractor by using the free service offered by the State at http://verify.tn.gov/ or call 1-800-342-4029.
The TDIC releases a list of 'Problem Contractors' each month at http://www.tn.gov/consumer/probcontractor.shtml , and their monthly disciplinary actions report at http://www.tn.gov/regboards/archive.shtml .
