MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Folks in Hamblen County got quite the light show overnight Sunday while crews worked to put out a transformer fire atop John Hay Elementary School in Morristown. Things have quieted down now, but it was a much different scene earlier.

A viewer, Leslie Eagle, captured this fantastic video of sparks shooting from the school's roof.

"We could smell the electrical fire going on and it was very loud, and as you could tell in the video it was filling up the sky with very, very bright lights, but it was something that we was concerned about. We was afraid the school would burn down," said Eagle.

Authorities there said the transformer was sparking for more than an hour. Crews finally managed to get things under control around 1:30 a.m.

Some water damage was found on some ceiling tiles, but that's it at this point.

"We're currently getting pricing on some items for repairs, and you can see behind us maintanence has been incredible about getting out here very earlyand getting to work on our situation here at John Hay," said Matthew Drinnon, Principal of John Hay Elementary.

No word yet on what caused the transformer problems.

"We're not really sure what the cause is. We just know there was some damage where the electrical system comes in to the building," Drinnon.

Registration is still set for August. 5th.
