Early Saturday morning Russell posted on his Facebook page, "Thanks for the prayers everyone! I'm VERY sore tonight."

In 2012, Russell was parked alongside I-40 West near Gallaher View Road, finishing up some paperwork after a traffic stop, when a semi hit his cruiser from behind.

The vehicle was wedged against a wall and went up in flames with him inside.

Russell says he can't wait to return to Vonore. "As I lay here in ICU I'm reminded how THANKFUL that I am to be from East Tennessee! San Francisco is an interesting place to visit but I'll be happy to get back home," he posted on his Facebook.

He also said, "I'm not good at sitting still so I hope that they will allow me to walk soon!"
