NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Two people were killed in a ten-car pile-up outside Murfreesboro just after midnight Thursday morning, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. NewsChannel5, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, says they were on their way to Bonnaroo.

Three others were taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical Center, while two more went via ambulance.

All eastbound lanes of I-24 were shut down between mile markers 80 and 81. Traffic was being diverted and, by 3:30 a.m., had mostly cleared up, THP reported.

Investigators said the wreck happened around 12:19 a.m. on Interstate 24 Eastbound around Mile Marker 81. They believe a tractor-trailer came up on congestion caused by an earlier crash and could not stop in time. The semi struck several vehicles, one of which burst into flames. They are expected to release a crash report once the preliminary investigation is complete.

THP says it has taken the lead in the investigation and is working with TDOT, the Rutherford Co. Sheriff's Office, Murfreesboro Police Dept. Rutherford Co. Emergency Management Agency, and Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue.
