“Sergeant Mike Ledbetter, who was wounded during a shooting at a trailer park on Canton Hollow Road on Thursday, is recuperating in Intensive Care at U.T. Medical Center following a four hour surgery from last night. Sergeant Ledbetter received a potential life threatening injury to the lower left leg. A major artery was severely damaged which caused substantial blood loss. More surgeries will be necessary.
The preliminary investigation shows that officers fired approximately 47 rounds. An autopsy is expected to reveal how many times the suspect, 21 year old Jordan Camp, was struck. Preliminary evidence at the scene indicates Sergeant Ledbetter may have been struck by a ricocheting round with the origin yet to be determined. According to the surgeon, the numerous particles in the officer’s leg are so small that there may be nothing to recover.
Sergeant Ledbetter is 41 years old and has been with the KCSO since January 16, 1995. He went to patrol in March 1998 and was promoted to sergeant in January 2008. He is currently a sergeant on patrol and serves on the SWAT Team. According to his personnel file, he and his K-9 partner at the time, Iro, were Officers of the Month in February, 2004.
I want to give a special thanks to Chief David Rausch and the Knoxville Police Department for their assistance of traffic control on the interstate and expediting the officer’s quick arrival at U.T. Medical Center. Rural Metro’s quick response and attention to the scene is also deeply appreciated. I also want to recognize the professionalism and support we received from the U.T. Medical Center and their Security Director, Dickey Hogan.”
