SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Hundreds of people who can't afford medical coverage are getting free physical exams in Sevier County.

The Mountain Hope Good Shepherd Clinic in Sevierville is giving exams to the uninsured. The clinic serves 18,000 people and says they keep turning people away.

The service is provided by medical students from ETSU with supervision of medical doctors.

"We're seeing patients today who say they haven't been able to see a physician for years and so they're coming in for free screenings and laboratory tests," said Dr. Ken Olive, Executive Associate Dean at ETSU.

Olive says this is a good way to give care to people who need it and help the young doctors learn how important free medical care can be.

"These people are around you and what ever community you are in, there are people who are under served who have poor access to care. So what role as a doctor do you play," Michelle Tanner, a 4th year medical student said about her reflection on the day.

The free clinic is open to uninsured people who live or work in Sevier County Thursday 8:30am - 4:30pm.
