Union Co. Schools shut down due to illness

MAYNARDVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It was a Tuesday afternoon tha felt more like a Friday at Union County High School. All classes and extra curricular activities down for the rest of the week due to illness.

Union County officials made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. They said schools will be back in session on Monday.

Tonya Dyer, a mother of two middle school students, agrees with the decision.

"I feel they're protected when they got the flu shot a little more but I would rather them be at home rather than be around people who are sick," she said.

Dyer told Local 8 News her two sons at Maynardville Middle School haven't gotten sick thanks to the flue and sanitizing.

Union County schools will be sanitized while students and staff recover from flu-like symptoms.

This is not the first time illness has canceled school. Last February, district officials canceled school for two days as flu and flu-like symptoms swept through the student body, especially at the middle and high school.
