UNION COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) --- It was a unique idea when it was introduced. Help a struggling district financially by outsourcing healthcare in the hallways.
Union County Schools inviting an outside practice to open a clinic in the schools.
The kids would be covered, the school wouldn't pay, and the clinic would be able to make money by treating parents and faculty as well.
But the plan failed when the company in charge folded.
Now the Union County clinics are closed up.
So what does the healthcare system in schools look like now? We caught up with Director of Schools Wayne Goforth and this is what the conversation went like,
Goforth: "We have 2 and a half nurses."
WVLT: "Throughout the district."
G: "Throughout the district, yes."
WVLT: ""Is that enough?"
G: "No it's not, but its all we can afford and we cant really afford that."
So they've started searching for another clinic to come in and make a home in the schools.
But timing could be difficult. Mr. Goforth tells us with clinic budgets typically finished in June the schools could be out of luck until the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.
