United Way aims to reach goal

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- It's 12-12-12 and the United Way wants to remind you to donate to them before the end of the year; so they can reach their $12 million goal.

For nearly 4 months they have raised over $10 million, an impressive accomplishment but they're still $2 million behind their goal.

Ben Landers, President & CEO of the United Way said "Last year we raised $11.6 million so this year we wanted to do even better and set a goal of $12 million."

All the money raised will help 46 agencies and more than 100,000 people in the area. However, if the United Way doesn't raise enough money some agencies could lose funding.

The YWCA Transitional Living Program is just one of the agencies that would lose funding. It's a program that helps women who need a fresh start at a new life.

Danielle Benson, of the YWCA said "We house 58 women and teach them the skills they need to live independently and self-sufficient when they head out into the real world."

The women all pay a small fee to stay at the YWCA but it's not enough money to keep the program running; that's why the United Way grant money is so important.

"We get over $96,000 of grant money from our local United Way and without them we wouldn't be able to operate." said Benson

So as the year comes to an end; don't forget about the United Way of Greater Knoxville.

"Simply put- the more money we raise- the more people we can help." said Landers
