KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Ben Atchley Home for Veterans is a place to rehabilitate elderly veterans while giving them a quality place to live.
The home serves nearly 150 veterans who are doing more than just sitting around; they're giving back to the community in the form of baby hats.
Greg Channell, a physical therapist at the home said "We were trying to figure out something for the veterans to do that would help someone while helping themselves with fine motor skills."
It was a new skill for many of the veterans at the home especially because there's mostly men.
Felix Line a veteran said "I just did what they told me to do. I don't know a thing about making a cap and I just went through the motions."
But going through the motions created hundreds of baby hats that will be perfect for newborn babies at Tennova Hospital.
Ann Hobson, the wife of a veteran said "It was a privilege to us to make them. The best part is knowing that we were able to give to someone other than ourselves."
It also was a chance for the veterans to socialize and work together on making a difference.
Gene Wenzel, a veteran said "Bottom line is we're helping the community and giving back to some very special people."
