Volunteer Spirit: BKW wing festival profits feed two charities

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- They were hoping for 3,000 people at the first ever BKW festival at World's Fair Park. Estimates are 5,500 showed up!

They started with 30-thousand wings. But ended up using more than 55,000!

The 30 teams involved in the cooking competition were frying them, grilling them, and even smoking them.

Members of the community including several of us from local 8 news, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, members of the Knoxville Fire Department, The News Sentinel, and Jewelry Television judged.

But the real winner, the charities.

Matt Beeler of BKW Seasonings and founder of the festival, chose the Ronald McDonald house and empty stocking fund to split the funds.

Matt says, "I'm a small company trying to establish my name is part of it. I enjoy helping out. I grew up here and while I can I want to help out as many people as I can."

Angie Howell with the Empty Stocking Fund says, "All of our money goes to feeding disadvantaged families. We will give out 3,600 food baskets along with 3,000 toys this Christmas."

Sue Beverly, the executive director at the Ronald McDonald House says, "It takes about 600,000 dollars a year to keep the house open and going and we raise every penny through events like this."

Matt says he will be taking a break, but only until football season.

"We'll be back as Tailgater of the Game promotion through football season, and we'll start planning for Wingfest 2014."

That date is June 21, 2014!

In the meantime you can find Matt's BKW Seasonings at Food City, Kroger and The Fresh Market.
