Knox County School Board approves budget

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- The Knox County School Board voted in favor of a budget with a $13 million increase this year and a focus on security.

The vote comes a year after a budget battle that involved dozens of public meetings and ad campaigns from both sides.

This year no proposed tax increase to fund the additional dollars.

There is a focus on school security. Dr Jim McIntyre has proposed $1.7 million from the General Fund be used to hire and train 58 new School Resource Officers.

There's also $3.9 million in new funding for upgrades to security cameras, the addition of security vestibules, and the introduction of security features like key cards.

"I think it's a very good budget that will allow us to continue to focus on our educational priorities and continue to make academic progress. You know it's a more modest proposal, said McIntyre.

The County Commission must now approve the budget.
