Walking to end Alzheimer's

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- Alzheimer's is a disease that hundreds of thousands of Tennesseans have to live with. That's why more than 1400 people walked for a cure...hoping to raise money and awareness... many of them in orange.

From those living with Alzheimer's to those whose lives it's touched...

"We see it everyday."

An army of people came through for the 22nd Annual Alzheimer's Walk including some of our very own folks from Local 8 News.

On site, former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer

And Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt who shared words of encouragement.

Pat Summitt said..."it is said you're never defeated unless you give up. We're not going to give up."

A strong role model...after being diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2011.

"She shines a spotlight that allows people to accept it and learn more about it."

The crowd...many of them in orange and purple...joined forces to try and help Alzheimer's Tennessee reach its goal-- a record 230 thousand dollars.
Money that will be available to you or someone you know if it's ever needed.

Janice Whitehead says, "these funds will stay locally to funnel help your families neighbors your friends. So you can rest assured they will come right back to the community where they're raised with the exception of research."

Alzheimer's Tennessee finds out if they reached their goal next month-- the organization is accepting donations through May 14.
Local 8 News reporter Whitney Kent and Chef Walter showed their support.
And big supporter Heather Haley was a speaker at the event.
