COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Running back Todd Kelly led Knoxville Webb to its seventh championship and fourth in the last five seasons, beating St. George's 28-14 in the TSSAA Division II-A state championship on Thursday at Tennessee Tech's Tucker Stadium.
Kelly ran for three touchdowns, collecting 248 yards on 19 carries. Two of his touchdowns, on runs of 62 and 27 yards, came in the opening quarter as the Spartans (11-2) jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
The Gryphons (9-4) answered in the second quarter as quarterback Dean Brown ran for a 3-yard touchdown, then completed a 74-yard touchdown strike to Corey Jones with 56 seconds left before halftime. Scott Mullahey caught the two-point conversion to knot the game at 14.
In the third quarter, Webb's Matthew Melton broke the tie with a 26-yard run for a score, and Kelly scored from 8 yards out with 7:12 left to play. Webb had an interception, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
For the Gryphons, Brown ended the game with 191 yards passing on an 11-for-27 effort.
